Leaving the harvested wheat field without taking half of the stubble with us, was not easy and it drove Jen crazy…:)
We were grateful to have had access to the field as we were desperate to find somewhere to stop, last night. My eyes were very sore driving west into the setting sun, and from accumulating tiredness. I suggested Jen should take the controls for a while but funnily she didn’t seem to hear me…:)
When driving the 200m back to the road, there were two combine harvesters ready to remove the stubble. Nothing goes to waste. How the stuff grows in such an arid climate, god only knows!! We had a reasonable sleep, thankfully
The day passed on a combination of rural and town roads without making a great deal of progress. That’s the downside of staying off toll roads. It’s been interesting to see the influence of EU membership in the countries we are passing through. Improving infrastructure and pride in the housing. What has stood out though, the size of the graveyards and amount of monumental polished stone in both Serbia and Croatia. The price of conflict.
By 2pm I said to Jen, “we need a to find a hotel room soon as I’m suffering from eye strain”.

Within half an hour she had identified and programmed the address into her phone. Finding it though, without a single identifying sign outside. We needed to find someone to book in with. After 15 min calling and opening every door we finally found a housemaid who allocated us a room.
Whew, a heat pump/air-con and lovely bathroom. The temperature outside is 37deg and when going out to cook dinner in Poki at 7pm, it was 41 degrees!!
The people in this part of the world seem to understand the need for no thick duvet’s on their bed, just two covers which we could curl up in each one, and with the the temp set at 24 degrees C, slept like logs.
