Day 43. Sunday, 2nd August, 2026. From a farm in Serbia, near Nis to a field somewhere near Novi Sad.

We woke up refreshed at our campsite on the farm. It was already getting hot and as we packed up, swallows swooped all around us catching the insects we disturbed in the long grass. Today was the hottest we had experienced so far. It seems incongruous that the further west we go back towards the U.K. the hotter it gets. Turkiye, which I had expected to be unbearable, was actually cooler and we had several thunder showers, which cooled it down.

Pleasant Driving

We are driving on non-toll roads. Apart from saving money, it is more interesting driving on smaller roads. Toll roads are boring. All was going well. We were never far from the toll road and often crossed over it or passed underneath. We passed through a lovely gorge with many mini tunnels.

All went Pear Shaped

After a morning of enjoyable driving, we missed a turn not watching the sat-nav. Realising our mistake we tried to go back and get on track. It didn’t work. We found ourselves on a road which was closed for roadworks. In this part of the world, there is no such thing as a directed detour. Not even any advice that a road is closed until you come to a barrier across the road. The sat-nav was useless as it kept taking us around in circles and back to the closed road. We stopped and asked for advice and were directed on to the toll road. Not wanting to take this we carried on and somehow got around the problem road.

As it was late afternoon we looked for camping. On the sat-nav we found a camp on the outskirts of Belgrade. When we got there, however, it was no longer a camp, but now an industrial complex. The personnel on the entry gate, advised there was camping two streets away. We failed to find it and found ourselves heading into the centre of Belgrade.

Belgrade

We finished up driving across the city and once beyond the outskirts were in really open countryside. Not much opportunity for a hidden camping spot. As it was getting late, eventually we pulled off on to a harvested field and drove across it to the far side. A slight decline and the distance from the road, made us difficult to see from the road.

Setting up in the straw stubble was something different, but we coped, quickly getting the tent up and having a very welcome beer. After a brief time to relax, dinner was prepared and we were quite quickly in bed. Even with our fan on full power and our air conditioner going it was still 29 degrees in Poki. Sleep might be difficult.
